What a night for the lunar eclipse, it was fantastic. The weather was great, and I even got a great shot or two. It is 130 am, and I was trying to wait for the other side to come out but I may have to get going to bed.

Learning

After a while you learn
the difference
holding a hand or changing a soul
and you learn
love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't mean security
kisses aren't contracts
presents aren't promises
and you learn
with your head up and your eyes open
accepting your defeats
and you learn
to build your roads today
because tomorrow's too
uncertain ground
and futures have a way of falling down
mid-flight
and you learn
sunshine burns if you get too much
plant your garden
decorate your soul
instead of waiting for flowers
and you learn
and you learn
with ever good-bye, you learn....

This is my new puppy, she is a 4 month old husky cross. She really likes the outdoors, and walking. Last night we went for a nice long walk then too bed early. Kuma woke me up with a generous face licking, and out we went, she hasn't gone to the washroom in the house.  She likes just handing out right beside me...last night she slept right at the foot of the bed.
The wind has really picked up again, but it is not really snowing just blowing around.  We went out for about 45 mins, I had to were the goggles that I bought for the blizzard.  I have never trained a dog on my own before...This should be fun, but Kuma seems to be pretty smart. I hope that its not a difficult task.

These are just a few of the shots that I took while the blizzard was on... The wind was so strong, I was being blown around. After the snow passed the town was still closed for a full day, the snow drifts in place were 15 feet tall. I will post some more photo's of after the storm tomorrow. I am really enjoying Cambridge Bay, it is a very friendly community. Tonight there is a fundraiser for the daycare, with a dinner and silent auction then some dancing...I am NOT a dancer, but I am sure that the dinner will be fun.

Am I insane?

Friday, November 19, 2010

The wind was blowing at 45 mph, and gusting up to 60 mph. It was insane today, then I was told that this was nothing!!!!  I think that this is a great invention, it might work in the city not very useful around here.  Currently it is 10:41 pm, and the wind is blowing so hard that my second floor apartment is moving, enough that I can feel it.  It is a kinda freaky feeling...

So today at work was an interesting day...This afternoon, a gentleman came in requesting something that the store does not do, when I advised him that it was against head office policy he told me that he no one needed to know about it.  Then I reiterated that we would not be able to help him in the way he would like. Well I was called every name in the in the book, plus a few other choice curse words. I was needed at one of the other tills, when he told me he was going to be waiting outside for me...Before I moved here some of my friends in the RCMP in Tuk told me about how rough it was here, I think that I know what they mean now.

Blizzard

Wow, if you were at all wondering what a blizzard is really like? Just ask, outside currently the wind is gusting up to 65 mph, my house is shaking in the wind, and the snow is going everywhere. My neighbors house is about 50 ft from the corner of my house and I can't see it!!! Well it time to hit the shower before work, I will get some pictures durinf the day today.

Cambridge Bay

Cambridge Bay NU Airport

The plane that finally made the trip.
So I have finally made it to Cambridge Bay Nunavut. I absolutely love it here. I have a fantastic apartment, there will be more pictures to follow. We are going into the dark winter months here, I leave for work and the sun is just rising, around 8 am, then by 3 pm it is dark already. I was planning on going into work on Thursday because the store is closed, I can do alot more to try and get caught up. The new position has more challenges, but is so nice to be in control of the department. I do have my work cut out for me trying to get things back in order, and the way that head office would like it to look.
From where I live is about to work is a nice 10 minute walk. The town here is much more built up than Tuk, even the way the village is layed out.
I am really hoping to get more pictures, of the village and some of the sights, in the next couple of days.
Until then keep your stick on the ice...

11:00 am Oct. 28/2010

10:30 am Oct.28/ 2010

10:00 am Oct. 28/ 2010
Well I knew that it was coming but the days are sure getting shorter, I just took these photos this morning. The sunn is just about visible. The last week has been pretty nice here, avg temperatures I think nothing that is unbeardable. Yesterday we got some more snow, just a little bit. Like 3" or so.
On Monday, I accepted a new job posting in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. I have already started packing, and sending out some boxes. When I spoke to my new district manager on Monday he said that I would be leaving in approx. 2 weeks. I am so excited to see another part of this great country of ours. I LOVE CANADA. Really we have such a great country, with some much culture that mostly goes unnoticed. I have been taught so much by the people here in Tuk, and Fort Good Hope, if you are ever given the opportunity to travel to either of these places I would strongly recommend it.
As I have been here now for 6 months I have come to realize that there is no regular business hours that the rest of the world live by. Town events are commence on any given day, today there is a fishing derby. It starts a 12:30 pm and runs until 6:00pm then there is warm drinks and prizes afterwards.
Last week those are all herring laying on the ice

Rough Town

So I knew that Tuk was a rough place but what happened on Wednesday night is just horrible. A 21 y/o man beat a 60 y/o man so badly that he had to be medivac'd out of Tuk with blood coming from his ears. They first took him to Inuvik, then quickly sent him onto Edmonton. That same 21 y/o male beat the older woman that was in the house. The alcohol in this community is insane, there is currently 3 different bootleggers that can be called at any given time and will sell a 40 oz bottle of whiskey for 200$. I have even heard of kids as young as 15 purchasing these bottles. I am simple appalled at what happened to this old man, when ever he was in the store he was polite, and reserved.
It is not uncommon to see people in the store on a regular basis with black eyes, I suppose it is a part of the life being up here. I can't deal with that. Last night I had a couple of people over for the weekly highlight of Bingo. I didn't win again, but it was fun. One of the girls won and the first thing she did was call the bootlegger. I guess when this is all you know, then that is what you do...
One thing that I will never understand is how does Canada Post work?

So I put Big Bird in the oven around lunch time, then had to go over to the store to unload some freight. I came home and the house was really starting to smell good. This is the first time I have ever tried cooking a turkey, I must say it turned damn fine. Juicy tasty goodness! I really do love turkey, I think that by the time I am done going through what is left over, I might feel different about it. So when there was an hour left in the cooking time I ventured outside for a walk around the community. The wind was really blowing like it usually is, but I think that I got some good shots, I especially like the one of the kids using a GT to go down the hill onto the road. Nothing surprises me anymore...
I think that I have found the perfect recipe a Ceasar...2 oz Vodka, 3 ice cubes, tablespoon of HP sauce, worcheshire 3 -4 shakes, 2 lime wedges, pepper, and 1/2 tablespoon of horseradish, 1 stalk of celery. Enjoy

Hope everyone had a great Thanks Giving

Sometime over the summer while I was away, this old boat was painted

Jason, Rachel, and I

Raven trying to get out of the snow and wind

Here are some random picture from the last couple of weeks, I can't believe that it is Thanks Giving Weekend already. I bought a turkey, the first one ever. I am sure that it can't be that hard to cook it. In the last two weeks, it has snowed almost ever day. Not for the whole day or anything but it has been substantial. The wind has blown most of it away, however the snow machines are running ever where. I would say that there is about 5 -7 inches of snow.
Today was the first day that I have tried baking anything in a long time, I will let you know how it turned out...

Back in Tuk

Well it has been awhile since I have been here. I have been back in Tuk for about 2 weeks now, and in that time a lot has changed. The weather is the big thing. Last night it was snowing and blowing steady, this morning not much accumulation here, but it continues to fall. The wind just keeps on blowing it around. We are supposed to get a container today, so unloading in the wind will be fun. There is around 4" of snow on the ground already, and the lakes already have ice on the top. The edges of the ocean are starting to freeze. At night the temp. dips down to -15 to -18.
The northern lights the other night were amazing, I have been online looking at camera's, not really in my budget right now, but maybe sometime in the near future. They are amazing!!!

Sunday, September 12, 2010

I have temporarily lost my internet connection, but have lots of pictures to post, and tell about from the last two weeks here in Norman Well. On Thursday I will be heading back up north to Tuk for the winter and will be posting them then. Until then keep your stick on the ice

Sunday, August 29, 2010

Wow I just went for the greatest hike, and think that it was possiblly one of the best days of my life.  I had such a great day.  The hike down the Goat Trail was so steep, like a 75 degree down grade. There are ropes on hills for safety, then there are ropes that you have to use. In this case it is the latter reason. The path is around  16 inches wide and nice and easy at first then it drops off. It was interesting trying to find a crossing for all the creeks. There must have been 5 different tributaries, all like 8 ft wide. The valley was so breathe taking being out there all alone, it was quiet and peaceful. Amazing. I was very successful in finding any fossils in Fossil Canyon but to be honest I wasn't really looking that hard, I was more interested in making my way up the river to the waterfall. I am off for now I am simply put exhausted. What a great day.
